Referral to an endocrinologist

I was hoping to get a referral to a doctor with experience prescribing hormones who practices a little closer my home, but apparently there are none. My family doctor contacted me today to let me know that she is referring me to Dr. Lucretia Vandenberg, an endocrinologist who practices in Victoria, BC.

As I understand it, Dr. Vandenberg will provide a physical assessment to determine if there are any medical reasons that would suggest that it would be dangerous for me to take testosterone, and design my course of treatment (should I choose to pursue testosterone.) It is presumed that I would need to see her only a couple of times, then my regular family doctor could oversee my hormone therapy.

I have heard of Dr. Vandenberg via some email lists and comments from other transguys, and she seems to have an excellent reputation. Words like “amazing”, “expert”, “specialist”, “calm”, “confident”, “knowledgeable” and “wonderful” have been used to describe her by some trans folks. On a non-trans site, I found a number of negative references, particularly with respect to “absolutely no bedside manner” and being “rude”. I guess I’ll have to find out for myself!

I will now look forward to hearing from her office to book an appointment, and have been told to expect a wait time of about one month.
